School of Information Science and Engineering of Southeast University was formerly  Department of Radio Engineering of Nanjing Institute of Technology. Its long history can be traced back to Department of Electrical Engineering(EE) of National Southeast University in 1923. In 1928, Department of EE of National Southeast University was renamed Department of EE of National Central University. In 1932, Prof. CHEN Zhang came to the department. Since 1936, he has served as the director of the department. During this period, he pioneered the radio education in China. In 1952, Nanjing Institute of Technology was established in the adjustment of colleges and universities nationwide. Department of EE was divided into Department of Electrical Engineering and Department of Telecommunications Engineering. Later, Department of Telecommunications of Zhejiang University, Xiamen University, and Shandong Institute of Technology incorporated and established Department of Radio Engineering. Professor Chen Zhang served as the first dean of the department. In 1956, about one-third of the teachers transferred to Chengdu to support the newly-built Chengdu Telecommunications Engineering Institute (now University of Electronic Science and Technology). In 1961, Department of Electrical Vacuum Devices was separated from Department of Radio Engineering, and Department of Electronic Devices (now School of Electronic Science and Engineering, Southeast University) was established. In 2006, Department of Radio Engineering was renamed School of Information Science and Engineering. In April 2018, Information Security discipline was separated from the school, with some relevant disciplines formed School of Cyberspace Security.

The school has two national first-level key disciplines of “Electronic Science and Technology” and “Information and Communication Engineering”, and two first-level doctoral degree authorization points and post-doctoral stations. It covers four national second-level key disciplines of “Communication and Information System”, “Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology”, “Signal and Information Processing”, and “Circuits and Systems”. In 2017, Electronic Science and Technology discipline and Information and Communication Engineering discipline were both elected as national Double First-Class construction disciplines, with A and A- in the Fourth National University Discipline Assessments.

The school has two state key laboratories, National Mobile Communications Research Laboratory and State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves, National “2011 Plan” Collaborative Innovation Center in “Wireless Communications Technology”, Key Laboratory of the Water Acoustic Signal Processing of Ministry of Education, and RF Integrated Circuits and Systems Engineering Research Center of Ministry of Education.

The school has a school culture with high aspirations, unity and forge ahead, and truth-seeking and innovation due to the long-term accumulation of the traditional superiority disciplines of Southeast University. With the international reputation of the disciplines, it has recruited top scholars and famous professors home and abroad with a sustainable faculty team led by high-end talents and high-level talents. There are more than 220 faculty and staff members in the school, including 189 full-time teachers, of which are 61 professors/researchers, and 88 associate professors/associate researchers. There are 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 4 national 973/863 chief experts, 12 special professors/lecture professors of Changjiang Scholars, 7 national outstanding youth fund winners, 7 IEEE Fellow, 2 national “Ten-thousand Talents Program” technology innovation leader, 1 national “Ten-thousand Talents Program” outstanding youth, 3 Distinguished Young Professors of Changjiang Scholars, 6 National “Millions of Talents Program” Candidates, 6 National Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Experts, 1 National Teaching Master, 4 Outstanding Youth fund winners of National Natural Science Foundation, 2 National Natural Science Foundation Innovation Groups, and 3 Innovation Teams of the Ministry of Education.

The school aims at the international discipline frontier and the country's major strategic needs. Guided by the international discipline frontier and the major needs of national industrial development, economic construction, and national defense construction, the school strengthens basic research, focusing on interdisciplinary and innovation, and forms a domestic first-class research direction, and has achieved fruitful research results in basic research, key technologies and industrialization, application demonstration systems, and standardization proposals. Some of the research has been at the forefront of the world. Since 2011, as the leading organization, the school has won 1 first prize of national technological invention, 2 second prizes of national natural science, and more than 20 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievements awards.

Undergraduate students are enrolled in Information Engineering major, which is among the Program with Distinctive Features at the National Level in the country (the first batch). It was awarded the title of Jiangsu Province Brand Major and passed China Engineering Education Accreditation. Master's and doctoral students are enrolled in four disciplines including Communication and Information Systems, Electromagnetic Fields and Microwave Technology, Signal and Information Processing, and Circuits and Systems. There are around 2,500 full-time students in the school, including 1,100 undergraduates, 980 postgraduates, 360 doctoral students, and more than 20 international students. Students won the highest prize in the national Challenge Cup college students' scientific and technological works competition, the Creating Youth National College Student Entrepreneurship Competition, the National Undergraduate Electronic Design Competition, and the China Internet + College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. So far, the college has more than 10,000 graduates, many of them has become leading talents and backbones in related fields. Among the graduates, 12 have been elected as academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences or academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
