1.Discipline profile

Signal and Information Processing is one of the earliest radio technology disciplines in China. It was entitled to offer one of the first doctoral authorization programs in 1981, and the postdoctoral work station was established in 1986. It was authorized as one of the first national key disciplines in 1988, and it was approved as a national key discipline in signal and information processing in 2002. The founders of the discipline are Professor Zhenya He ( Renowned expert in signal processing field, IEEE lifetime fellow, chief scientist of the national Eight-Five plan project) and Professor Jiren Lu (Specialist in underwater acoustic signal processing and the member of the discipline review group of the State Council).

The discipline is one of the research centers of signal processing in China, and has engaged to carry out researches in the fundamental theories and application developments in the cutting-edge technology fields, and has made outstanding achievements in both economic and defense constructions. This discipline has become a national first-level discipline that is renowned both domestically and abroad, especially in the research areas including adaptive signal processing, image and video information processing, communication signal processing, neural network and nonlinear information processing, underwater acoustic signal processing, etc. The discipline emphasizes both on teaching and scientific research, and has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents, based on the excellent undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. It has become one of the most influential talent training bases in the signal processing field in China.

The department has following academic and research institutions, including Key Laboratory on Underwater Acoustic Signal Processing of Ministry of Education, Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Multimedia Technology Institute (Jiangsu Digital Technology Engineering Research Center) and Information Acquisition Center. The academic faculty of our discipline consists of 39 members, of whom are 10 professors and 20 associate professors. The current director is Prof. Yongming Huang, who is the Young Talent of the Ministry of Education and the Young Yangtze River Scholar.

We have published hundreds of papers in the top-rank academic journals and more than twenty books, and have been authorized more than 100 invention patents.

4.Talent training

The discipline was entitled “Provincial Brand of Electronic Information Engineering in Southeast University” and is currently being constructed into a national-level distinctive major. A national-level teaching team has been led by Professor Zhenyang Wu, who is a national level outstanding teacher, and the teaching team has won six national-level and provincial-level teaching achievement awards. In terms of industry-university-research cooperation, the discipline has established a number of joint laboratories with internationally renowned ICT companies including the DSP Joint Laboratory with Texas Instruments, the FPGA Joint Laboratory with Xilinx, and the Smart Transportation Technology Joint Laboratory supported both by QnX and Texas Instruments. Many products, such as fusion communication stations and high-speed digital phosphor oscilloscopes, have been approved and industrialized, and more than 40 invention patents have been authorized.

The discipline has trained hundreds of doctors and masters, and won the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award of the State Council Academic Degree Office in the year 2000, the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Nomination Award in 2003 and 2007 respectively. Besides, Five articles were awarded as the Excellent Doctoral Thesis of Jiangsu Province.
