Course Introduction

This course is a public foundation course for information engineering majors, through this course, students will be well trained to obtain the following gains: the   skill to get and make full use of the information with good initiative and awareness, the basic methods of accessing scientific literature including SCI and EI papers, important scientific and technical reports, as well as the other relevant documents, the ability and quality of independent study and research. In addition, students will be familiar with the format, arrangement, and indexing types of various scientific documents, and will be proficient in reading various scientific and technical documents. This course will also show you the rational use of literature, the writing specifications of academic papers, writing methods and submission techniques.

 

 

      II.                 Course content and Time allocation

1.      Introduction to Literature Search Tools (4 period/in class)

To introduce the Chinese and English literature common databases, as well as the search method of scientific and technical literature, etc.; cultivate students' awareness and ability to actively obtain scientific and technical information, etc.

Introduction of specialized literature and its role in research.

   Introduction of various literature search tools including their categories and characteristics, classification of databases, Chinese search tools, and foreign language search tools.

Show of using multiple search tools for a survey of certain topic and introduce the search skills of these tools and how to select the proper one.

Through specific cases, students will understand the status and role of communication engineering in economic construction, enhance their patriotism and sense of social responsibility, and then strengthen their sense of honor and mission to join the creation of a world-class communication business.

2.      Introduction to the Structure of Scientific and Technical Literature and Reading Practices (8 period/in class)

To introduce the composition structure and respective characteristics of scientific and technical papers, including: title, author and organization, abstract (English abstract), keywords, introduction, main text (i.e. methods and results), discussion, references and other parts (e.g. acknowledgments). To organize students to read the specified Chinese literature and English literature, and discuss in groups.

3.      Practice Writing the Introduction and Main Text of a Scientific Document (8 period/in class)

As the key parts of scientific and technical literature, the features and writing requirements and skills of introduction and main text will be introduced. In the end, practice writing of the corresponding parts.

4.      Practice Writing Titles and Abstracts of a Scientific and Technical Documents (4 period/in class)

The title and abstract are important parts of scientific and technical literature, this session will introduce the characteristics and requirements of the title and abstract, and practice writing the corresponding parts.

5.      Writing Exercises of the Discussion and Summary Parts of the Scientific and Technical Document (6 period/in class)

The discussion and summary sections are the finishing touches of the scientific and technical literature. Writing excises are very useful.

6.      Reference Writing and Layout Exercises (Excluding the Reference Part of the Content) (2 period/in class)

Reference is a necessary part of scientific and technical literature, and its specification is very important. This session will introduce the detailed specification of the reference part and then practice accordingly.
